How important is salary at the beginning of your career?

Hi. I am recent Masters degree graduate in Engineering (Computer Science). As expected, in this job market, my degree alone did not help me land a job and instead of wasting my time, I decided to pick up a programming language certification.

Looks like this certification helped me and I got through the interview successfully in a small start-up company (4 years old) and it is into SAP consulting. The compensation package that they offer is far below my expectations. But in a sense, I don’t think I should be expecting too much as I am just a “fresh out of college” material and have a lot to learn. From what I found after some internet research, you get to learn a lot at a startup, but may not be the ideal place for fresh graduates as they lack the structured environment of formal training and mentoring.

So what is your opinion? I am confused…..Do you think this is a good job offer, even though the salary is somewhat less and entails more work (since it is a startup).

Congratulations on having a backup plan. Take the job.
In technology, experience rules. And jumping into the deep end may be the best way. At a start up, you will have to wear many hats. A guy who can wear many hats, has many carer options.
In the real world, there is no such thing as a structured environment of formal training and mentoring.

The boss mentors you because he wants to get something off his desk. At a start up, the boss wants everything off his desk, so he has to mentor you on everything.

Those who embrace chaos, thrive. Those who flee chaos end up making buggy whips.
