Common Explorer Connection Errors and Causes

Explorer errors can be of various types and frequencies, as listed below.

When you can connect, but not always: if you can connect even once then the problem does not lie with your settings. Then either the network would be busy or maybe your server has the tendency to go offline. Try connecting at different times of the day when the traffic is comparatively less. If the problem persists contact the service provider.

When you can’t connect at all: go to My Connections. Check if the website address, your server name, login name and password are entered correctly.

If the above steps fail you can try the following:

Check that your system can access the network and the server is responding to network traffic. If the system does not respond contact your system administrator.

Try connecting to your server using another application. You can pick your connection type from the following list:

FTP connection: use command line or third party FTP client.
WebDav connection: use Goliath or DAV Explorer.
LAN (Local Area Connection): try approaching your site through the network. On Windows you can do this by mapping a network drive or using the Run command found in the Windows Startup menu.

Go to advanced settings of the dialog box.
check server permissions. A server can be best described as a computer that many user’s share. In order to maintain the privacy of different users permissions are issued or restrained selectively. Different levels of permission can be set for different files and folders. A connection problem can occur because you don’t have adequate permission backup.

Another possible scenario is that ‘connection failure’ dialog box appears when you try to connect to the network: this can sometimes happen even when you are connected to an active network. Close the connection failure box. If the box continues to appear then check if you are connected to the network.

If the dial-up box is displayed when you are already connected to the network: this is a default function performed by internet explorer when it can’t detect a connection. You can prevent this by updating explorer settings to never dial up a connection.

Some other problems related to connection errors are:

Unable to view my connections dialog box: this can happen when Contribute is in offline mode.

Unable to move to the next panel in the connection wizard: wrongly entered connection information can be behind this. Also check if the website is using your system’s web browser.
Contribute freezes when sending a connection key: this happens when the Contribute fails to recognize your web-based mail program or web-client.
